Happy New Year!
As I sit here at home, surrounded by my four daughters and my wife Gail, I can’t help but feel a little reflective. The girls are still on a high from Christmas and the energy in the house is like nothing else. Even Summer, our six-month-old daughter is feeling it. It is a magical time of year, a new beginning.
So, What do you want from the year ahead?
Now is the time to decide where you want to be on this day in 12 months’ time and what success looks like to you. That’s the place to start. Success looks very different to different people. For me it’s about the impact you have on others. Sitting here with my wonderful family, I feel like the most successful man in the world!
Ultimately, it doesn’t matter how much money you make or how successful your brand is, what matters is how you help others. Do you make people smile?
The New Year is mine and Gail’s favourite time of year to take a few hours away, just us, look back at how we’re doing, to look ahead to where we’re going, and see who we’ve helped or will help along the way in 2017.
It is essential to take this moment to reflect on the past 12 months. Time passes so quickly that it is easy to forget to stop and take it all in. Moments pass by and we can easily miss an opportunity or a lesson and become caught up in the constant flurry of activity.
Pause to check the map and to plot your next destination. Invariably, things happen that blow you off course or distract you, and whilst we never know what is over the next hill, plotting your journey with goals helps you to get back on track and turn things around.
Personally, the New Year is also time to draw a line in the sand. What you achieved this year should become the baseline for what you achieve from now on. Mark this point as the beginning of the next stage of your journey or your business.
It is worth noting that I don’t agree with the ‘new year, new you’ sentiments. You don’t want to create a new ‘you’ but simply a better, more efficient, more successful ‘you’!
Goal setting shouldn’t just be something that is done for new year’s resolutions; goals should be set all year around but take this landmark in the calendar as your opportunity to be the best version of yourself, both as an entrepreneur and as a person.
