In 1961, just six years after gambling was legalised, Fred Done opened his first betting shop in Salford. Not one to pass up an opportunity, Fred began to expand his empire and by the 1990s Betfred was opening 80 new branches a year. Today, Betfred has more than 1,600 shops throughout the UK and employs 10,000 people.
Fred attributes his success to hard work, common sense and backing the right people. And, after more than 50 years in business, Fred shows no signs of slowing down. The 75-year-old is involved with 16 other businesses including Peninsula, Degree 53, Done Developments and Sports Tours International.
Fred shares his vast business experience with Lawrence including the successes and the challenges, the time he was stabbed by a disgruntled customer, and he reflects on what he’d do differently if he were to do it all again.
He also touches on the launch of The Running Bee Foundation, in memory of his wife, Mo after her death earlier this year.
