It doesn’t matter who you are. Whether you’re a nurse working night shifts, a full time parent or a business owner, in today’s busy lives, we can all find ourselves overstretched and juggling one too many balls in the air.

I think British people especially have a tendency to put a lot of effort into making sure those around them have what they need whilst letting their own needs fall by the wayside. It goes without saying that this isn’t true of everyone, but as a nation I think we don’t like letting people down. Is this why, sometimes, we’re guilty of letting ourselves down or, should I say, letting ourselves go?

Personally, I think putting others before yourself is a good trait to have but it can become a problem when it’s at the expense of your own health or wellbeing. Think about it; if you’re tired, out of shape or over stressed, how can you take care of others properly?  Having been in the Maldives for a while now, training in the gym, drinking carrot juice at breakfast and running on the beach, I’m at my lightest weight in a long time and I feel better than ever. For me, it took a break from the pressures of work to jolt me back into the realisation that I had let my fitness levels slip – not much, but enough for me to notice.

The energy boost that you get from exercising regularly, eating healthily and spending time with your family is incredible, and it’s such a simple formula. If you want to take on the pressures of life and help others, you need to be on top of your game and start by helping yourself. When you raise the bar for yourself, you’ve got to step up the pace and it stands to reason that a healthy mind and body make the process a lot easier.

So if you’re reading this now and you feel like you’ve let yourself go lately then seize the moment. Write down your health and fitness goals – right now. It’s never too late to start. Whether it’s getting more sleep, losing half a stone or simply eating more fresh healthy food, you can achieve whatever you set your mind to and, believe me, the results will be well worth the effort you put in.
