Anyone who knows me, knows that I’m a bit of a creative at heart. I stumbled into entrepreneurialism because I was so convinced that nobody would be mad enough to employ me, but before that I earned my keep playing the piano at the Midland Hotel.
Having spent so many years in Manchester, I’m well aware of the city’s cultural scene. So I was pleased last week when someone told me that the council are being urged to bid for the Capital of Culture title in 2023.
There’s no reason in my mind why we shouldn’t win. Manchester is home to the Halle Orchestra, Manchester Camerata and Chetham’s School of Music. It has some amazing venues and it always has done; think back to the days of the Hacienda (if you can remember them)!
Manchester was also the birthplace of some pretty iconic bands. Is it coincidence that so many of them hailed from the area or did the whole atmosphere of the place have something to do with it, influencing their style and providing them with a supportive, engaged community?
Whether the council does bid for Manchester to become City of Culture or not, I’ll always be proud to call it my adopted home.
What’s your favourite cultural place of interest in Manchester? I’d love to hear your ideas and experiences on this one.
