I couldn’t be happier to congratulate squash pro Laura Massaro, who has a huge achievement to celebrate this week! Not only is she the British Open Champion, but as of this weekend she’s World Champion as well, proving that women are equal to men in every way.

I speak for everyone here at UKFast when I say we’re very proud to sponsor Laura, who shares the values of passion and enthusiasm that are at the heart of our culture. Her step up to World Champion is the culmination of years of training, practice and goal-setting. In fact, I still have some of the targets Laura set herself on my whiteboard from a goal-setting session months ago.

One of these targets was “to play the best I have ever played and enjoy every minute.” I think it’s safe to say she smashed the first part of this goal, but I’m sure (from the smile on her face after the match) she managed the second part too, despite some pretty fierce competition from Nour El Sherbini, who is shaping up to be a great young talent.

There are so many lessons we can learn from Laura’s achievement and I think the most important is the power of self-belief. Winning in sport is as much a mental battle as it is a physical one, and when the stakes are so high, it takes a lot of grit to rise above any nagging doubts or worries and never waver or sit back. The more you believe in yourself, the more others will believe in you too, giving you a great sense of momentum to drive you forwards.

So, to the first English female squash world champion since 1999, a huge well done from all of us at UKFast! Feel free to stop by for a Friday beer when you’re next in town.
