While catching up on Richard Branson’s blog recently, I came across something really poignant he’d written about the impact of a strong team. Reflecting on the Virgin Strive challenge, he said that the best thing he’d learnt was the power of a group over individuals.
He wrote: “As the proverb says: If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
It’s an interesting saying, although I would argue that a strong team can operate with speed as well as maintaining that sense of momentum over long periods of time. Having said that, business is a marathon, not a sprint, so it makes sense to keep the pace and go the distance.
Ultimately, if you shrug off support from others you are missing a trick. Yes, it might be enjoyable to take all of the credit for an achievement, but at what cost? Who is celebrating with you? For me, that kind of celebration is nothing compared to the sense of pride a team feels having overcome a challenge together, sitting at the bar sharing a drink or two!
