What it is that makes great business owners and entrepreneurs jump out of bed every morning, ready to inspire their troops? Whilst individual motivations differ, I think there’s a common theme you can see if you look at some of the greats, the Richard Branson’s and John Timpson’s of the world: people.

Personally, this is something I can definitely relate to. Throughout the fifteen years UKFast has been around, I’ve always enjoyed working with groups of people and figuring out how to get the best out of them. It’s a challenge and not only does it lead to some great friendships, it also teaches you a lot about what makes certain individuals tick and makes you more aware of these things moving forwards.

In my experience, I’ve found that people enjoy work better and are generally happier if you create an amazing environment. We spend a third of our lives at work – that’s a lot of time to be somewhere that doesn’t inspire you. As I’ve said in the video below, the measure of a great office is how many people walk around in their socks, and I’m always happy when I see people relaxing in the lounge area or even having a nap at lunch. It just shows they’re comfortable in the environment you’ve created for them.

For any business owner, it’s important to figure out what it is that drives you. Take ideas from the people you admire, but don’t put them on a pedestal. Figure out what makes them inspiring, then try and beat them. Chances are, they’ll enjoy a bit of friendly competition, and it will keep you both on your toes.
