Having read Michael Rake’s comments about British businesses speaking out about our country’s EU membership, I felt compelled to write about the subject, which is clearly being hotly debated at the moment.
Reflecting on the outcome of the General Election, it seems to me that everybody is backing a stable Britain. From a business perspective I don’t think we need any more disruptions, so I don’t really want an EU referendum at the moment to be quite honest. I just want a bit of peace and quiet to get my head down and get on with things.
I’m willing to bet a number of SMEs would echo that desire and, in fact, it’s something Sajid Javid actually acknowledged on Tuesday during his first speech as business secretary.
All the noise about Scotland and whether they disconnect from the UK, or stand alone and have their own fully-fledged Scottish Parliament; that was a huge amount of wasted time and money and has created a very anti-UK, nationalist Scottish feeling, which is a real shame.
So do we need an EU referendum right now? Personally, I think it would create a wealth of unnecessary disruption and distraction, and surely that’s far from being good for business. What do you think? I’d be interested to hear your opinion.
