Congratulations to the UKFast and Furious netball team, who took part in Key103’s #ThisGirlCan netball tournament over the weekend. Now, I know what these girls are like so I wasn’t surprised to hear them admit they had set the goal to win it weeks ago.

fastWhile there was a fierce battle for first place, I’m proud to say the girls won. As you can see from the photo, they were pretty happy. It just goes to show what self-belief and perseverance can do.

I’d love to see the teams that came second and third set a goal to beat UKFast. Anyone at the top of a sport or industry is there to be beaten and, as the campaign states, you definitely CAN.

Whilst they might not make it easy for you along that journey, there’s no reason they can’t be defeated. Healthy competition makes everyone step up their game and it’s this continuous improvement that brings the standard up across the board.

I’ve said it before, but it’s so important: women are not inherently weaker than men. Whoever invests the most time and dedicates their life will become the better opponent. As more focus is placed on supporting girls as well as boys to compete from a young age, we will see stronger, better and faster women in the swimming pools and on the tracks and tennis courts.

#ThisGirlCan is not just a catchy slogan, it’s a universal truth, and one I’m glad my three daughters will grow up hearing.
