Have you ever found yourself feeling like you’re fighting a losing battle? Everything is an uphill struggle; it would be easier to throw the towel in.
It would have been easy for the Welsh rugby team to have crumbled this weekend – 10 points down with three horrific injuries to add to their ever-growing pile of broken bodies on the sideline.
Watching from Verbier – I sacrificed my tickets for the match to head over for a friends’ birthday and represent Wales in Switzerland – I couldn’t bear the tension!
Despite having the odds stacked against them, the team rallied; maintaining their belief, recovering from some questionable set-pieces and stoking the fire in their bellies. And they won it!
I am a firm believer in never giving up, in keeping your goals in sight and removing distractions – like the scoreline and the injuries! But, on the other hand, you could argue that adversity makes you fight even harder. Never underestimate the power of an underdog.
Whether a rugby fan or not, we can all learn from the teams’ approach that day.
It is incredibly hard, perhaps impossible, to disrupt someone who is so focussed on the end goal. If you have a solid belief in reaching the outcome that you are aiming for, very little will stop you achieving it.
I had many failures throughout school and in my younger life, and believe that this only helped me to develop a thick skin, resilience and focus. I now don’t know a way of giving up or quitting – it’s almost impossible!
That belief can start with setting a firm goal, plotting the path towards it and letting nothing stop you along the way – just like the Welsh team this weekend.
I guess the lesson we can take from it brings a literal meaning to the old idiom: ‘If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again!’
When have you felt like throwing in the towel? How have you beat the odds?
