Whilst it was the first day, in some cases, after almost two weeks off work for the festivities and most people on social media were bemoaning their return to work, the UKFast Running Club was true to form on Monday, and again today, to get the new year going full of energy.

Almost daily, the UKFast Running Club hit the streets for a lunchtime 5k around the park. It is astonishing how many people now take part in one or more runs each week.

It is also extraordinary to see just how many different levels of fitness and running ability are involved in each run. Some of the runners are able to run sub-40minute 10ks, half marathons and marathons, and there are also new runners or people just giving it a go. They have even specially designed a circuit to ensure that the faster runners get the workout they need but loop back to finish the course with the guys going at a steadier pace.

At this time of year it is all too easy to get caught up in the fads of the newest exercise or diet trends. I believe that no matter what time of year it is, you should start as you mean to go on. Just go for it!

That’s how our running club evolved, starting around five years ago at our old City Tower office. Now, it is an almost daily occurrence.

The first step is the hardest. Whether you’re walking or running, cycling or playing sports, or skiing like some of the team out in Verbier this week – the first step is always the hardest but you never know if or when that will turn into a habit and become part of your routine. Just go for it!
