Wherever I am, I always stick to my routine and it always involves exercise.
No matter how busy the week is, I have squash, personal training and runs scheduled in. I have learned over the years that when I miss these appointments, my mood changes, my motivation changes and things start to slip.
It’s important to push yourself out of your comfort zone even if it is for just a short period of time. This daily exercise and practice of pushing the boundaries filters into other areas of your life outside of the gym.
That’s why I strive to play at the highest level in whatever I do, against the toughest opponents. When I play squash it’s against the world number one; in the same way that when I play chess it is against some of the greatest players online. Whilst that’s not physical activity it is incredibly mentally strenuous and most certainly outside of my comfort zone.
Having time to take care of yourself is essential if you are running a busy company or trying to push yourself in your career. It gives you the opportunity – away from phones, emails and the office – to process how you’re feeling, how you’re going to tackle the rest of the day, and to motivate yourself.
If you are struggling for time, combine exercise with your hour to yourself, but remember both are essential and a necessary part of developing.
It is impossible to take care of others if you are not taking care of your own mind and body.
Make time for yourself!
