Are you thinking about setting up your own business in 2017? lawrence jones ukfast

Whether it’s a new year’s resolution or something you’ve been planning for a while, if you think 2017 is the year you’re setting up your own business, now is the time to turn those dreams into action. I know the year has only just got underway, but you know what they say about early birds.

There is something about the start of a new year that fills me with energy and the desire to do something new and exciting. Perhaps the start of every new year reminds me of when I was first starting out in business and the buzz and uncertainty I felt at the time.

Whatever your reason for deciding now is the best time to take the plunge – make sure you’re starting a business for the right reasons. Jim Collins talks of three circles that make up the perfect formula: are you passionate about it? Is it economically viable? Can you be the best in the world at it?

I’m convinced that having the right mindset is the most important thing when you want to start your own journey. You need unlimited amounts of energy, passion and focus!

You need to be ready to work harder than ever before. However, if you feel truly passionate, you shouldn’t feel worried about long days and the commitment required. We’ve all heard the saying ‘do something you love and you’ll never work a day in your life’.

Whatever you do, make sure you start by setting out your goals. What is your purpose? What is it you want to achieve? Once you have set your goals, put all of your passion into making it work, but don’t limit yourself.

Although planning is important, I soon realised that – particularly in the first year, and probably for quite some time after that – there will be times when things don’t go as planned. I don’t think you’ll speak to a single successful businessperson who hasn’t failed at something at some point during their early years in business. But that is all part of the journey and it certainly shouldn’t stop you from keeping going. These are opportunities to be motivated!

I don’t regret any of the mistakes I made because of the valuable lessons they taught me.

I hope 2017 is the year that you make your dreams come true! If you need any advice along the way, please drop me a message.

Good luck and keep me posted about your business journey. Happy new year!
