I have learned many lessons along my business journey. With more than 30 years’ experience, there have been some steep learning curves along the way, but it is often the smaller, 1% changes that make the most difference.

So what are my top four 1% changes to become more successful?

Pause

When you pause before reacting, you eliminate the likelihood of an emotional response. We’ve all had a gut response, fired a reaction, and regretted it immediately. Instead, pause, step back and think about the rational response that’s needed. It can be a tough habit to break, but once you do, you’ll reduce stress for yourself and those around you massively.

Recognise

Recognise that you cannot do everything. One of the greatest lessons that I have learned is to pull people into meetings; bring in other people’s expertise because no one person can be an expert at everything. Whilst you may end up with 15 people in one room, you’ll have all of the expertise you need to complete the job, meaning a faster, more efficient resolution.

Exercise

I can’t stress enough about how important exercise is when you’re a business leader. It reduces stress levels, releases endorphins and keeps you fit and healthy. But that doesn’t mean you have to start off in the gym every single day, make a small change – a quick run, a weekend swim or an exercise class to get the ball rolling. You will notice the difference in your energy levels immediately.

Don’t Snooze!

I set my alarm for 6.22am every single day and I get straight out of bed as soon as the alarm goes off. Set the tone for the day, get moving, get into a routine and very quickly the stress of being late in a morning will be removed and you’re able to focus on the important things at the start of your day.
