What makes a great place to work? How do you create an environment that people love to come to work in?
It’s an unenviable challenge and one I am learning about and striving to meet every single day, which is why I am incredibly proud to hear that UKFast has been named the fifth greatest medium-sized workplace in the UK – the top tech firm in the category ahead of the likes of PayPal, Renault, Jobsite and Lindt.
Though I am proud of every award that we win, these awards are extra special because they are voted for by the team themselves. And having been named Manchester’s best workplace and the UK’s fifth by Best Companies already this year, to be named fifth by the Great Workplace Institute is a real testament to what the team here are doing.
You can’t have a great workplace without great people. It’s as simple as that.
And great people deserve an extraordinary environment with real opportunities. Whilst to some it might seem strange to invest so heavily in training and education, to empower our team to do so much community outreach and to have an unusual office space with a slide; it actually makes perfect sense.
We’re helping our team to grow and develop and give back. I learned a long time ago that money only motivates people so far – what people actually thrive on is development and growth. Giving people the opportunity to give back to their community while learning a new skillset is invaluable.
Alongside this, of course, great people deserve great rewards. That’s why we held UKFest over the summer period – a three-day all-expenses-paid music festival headlined by Example for the UKFast team, family and friends. It was an extraordinary weekend that I will never forget.
The workplace environment is also unbelievably important to keep people happy. We spend a third of our lives asleep, a third at home and a third at work. Our time is precious and we really need to make the most of it! I try to help redress the balance with UKFast Campus and its onsite gym to help the team to make the most of their time here – working out before work or at lunchtime rather than taking time out of evenings that could be spent with friends or family.
There is, of course, always progress to be made and I am learning form the team every single day about how we can make UKFast bigger and better than before.
In the meantime, we’re proud to sit in the Great Workplaces and Best Companies list, proudly flying the flag for Manchester and tech companies.
