UKFast office - talking recruitment, getting your dream roleSeptember is said to be one of the best times of the year to look for a new career. After the summer break, recruitment starts to ramp up once again and people look for a change to combat the summer blues.

So, how do you stand out from the crowd? How do you make the best impression you can to get your dream job?

Having spent three decades building extraordinary teams for my businesses, I have picked up a few tips along the way. Here are my suggestions to help you get your dream role…

Be more than a CV

When you’re recruiting, there’s nothing worse than reading through reams of ‘copy and paste’ CVs. Template document after template document, they simply don’t give the best impression of the candidate. A piece of paper can never fully show who you are.

So take it to the next level! A quirkily designed CV, an interesting cover letter tailored to the role you’re applying for. If you’re applying for a creative role, be creative! Equally, video submissions are a fantastic way to show the business what you’re all about. It’s far more interesting to watch someone make a first impression in a video than reading a list of qualifications on a page.

Be yourself

At UKFast, we don’t look for qualifications, we look for your personality. Academic success can only take you so far; what’s really important is your attitude. Are you willing to learn and develop? Are you passionate and enthusiastic?

We can always teach new skills but attitude is ingrained. Show that you’re a great fit for the company’s culture and it would be hard for any recruiter to turn you down for a role!

Get to know the brand

There is nothing worse than not knowing your facts. Do your research ahead of an interview or application so that you know that this company is for you, and why. Prepare answers to questions – what have been your key successes, where do you need to grow, what do you want to achieve? These are standard interview questions that you should be able to answer in an instant. As is the question: what attracted you to the business? If you can’t answer this well, why are you applying to work there?

Make a good impression

The best first impression is a smile, a strong handshake and making eye contact. It’s that simple. Be aware of your body language to show that you’re engaged and interested, you’re comfortable and confident, and that you’re professional.
At UKFast, we’ve always asked the opinions of our Front of House team with any new candidate. If you’re rude to the team on the reception desk but switch it on for the CEO or MD, you’re certainly not the right candidate for us.

Be positive

When you believe that you are the perfect candidate for the role, you answer questions with conviction; you’re confident and it shows.
