Whilst business books, mentors and role models are an invaluable source of advice and knowledge, often lessons can crop up in the most unusual of places – take the Disney Pixar animation Finding Nemo for example.
Within the fun and games of the animated children’s film following the journey of a dad (clown fish, Marlin) searching for his lost son (Nemo), there are actually some incredibly valuable messages that are infinitely transferable to the business arena.
Don’t believe me? Take a look…
Learn to just keep swimming
Absent-minded fish Dory is famed for her out-of-tune singing to motivate Marlin on the quest to find his son. She says: “When life gets your down, do you want to know what you’ve got to do? Just keep swimming, just keep swimming. What do we do? We swim!”
In your everyday life, what do you do when you hit a roadblock or feel deflated? You keep going! Just keep swimming!
Even when you feel all is lost, you may be closer to success than you realise
At the end of the film when it seems to Marlin that all is lost, he’s really just a moment away from the ‘happily ever after’ and from reaching his goal. We’ve all seen the cartoon drawing of a person digging a tunnel and giving up when they’re actually just one more scoop away. You never know what’s around the corner but one thing is for sure, you’ll never find out if you give up.
Your (dis)abilities don’t define you
Nemo’s father is incredibly over protective because of Nemo’s fin, which was damaged as an infant. Questioning whether Nemo is able to swim well enough for school, Marlin’s over-protective behaviour proves ineffective when Nemo proves everyone wrong by swimming out to sea.
The tiny fish with a ‘lucky fin’ as he describes it, manages to escape captivity and swim halfway across the ocean. Just because you’re told you can’t do something, doesn’t mean you can’t do it!
Get out of your comfort zone!
From the safety of the anemone in the coral reef, these two clown fish experience the world thanks to a series of unforeseen circumstances. When they leave their comfort zone, they have experiences they could never have imagined! This rings true for all of us. More often than not, the most exciting things in life happen just beyond our comfort zone.
Have you learned lessons from unusual places? I’d love to hear about them in the comments below.
